Bishop Gregory's
Statement
Our nation is on the brink of war. We worked and prayed and
hoped that war would be avoided. The task now is to work and pray
and hope that war's deadly consequences will be limited, that
civilian life will be protected, that weapons of mass destruction
will be eliminated, and that the people of Iraq soon will enjoy a
peace with freedom and justice.

Pope Doesn't Put Bush and Saddam on Same Level
Cardinal explains that Holy Father Wants Disarmament -- and
Respect for Law. "When sending Cardinal Roger
Etchegaray to meet with Saddam Hussein, he took this message: an
urgent request to take disarmament seriously, keeping in mind
above all the evil he would bring on his own country and the
innocent population, if he does not collaborate fully with the
U.N. inspectors," Cardinal Tucci said on Vatican Radio.

Cardinal Laghi's
Statement Following Meeting with Bush
The Holy See is urging those in positions of civil authority to
take fully into account all aspects of this crisis. In that
regard, the Holy See's position has been two-fold. First, the
Iraqi government is obliged to fulfill completely and fully its
international obligations regarding human rights and disarmament
under the UN resolutions with respect for international norms.
Second, these obligations and their fulfillment must continue to
be pursued within the framework of the United Nations. крупнейшие грузоперевозчики россии

Pope's Address to the
Diplomatic Corp
The Pope's message begins with three focuses for the diplomatic
corp. - Say Yes to Life, Respect for Law and Duty of Solidarity.
The Pope then goes on to say No to Death, No to Selfishness, and
No to War.
The Pope's words are clear - he does not want war in Iraq. He
has grave reservations with this course of action. But in
the media you don't hear that he states, "war cannot be
decided upon...except as the very last option and in accordance
with very strict conditions..." The Pope is obviously stating that
the Just War Doctrine must be in place with regard to the pending war with Iraq,
but he has never stated that this would be an unjust war. He urges and challenges us that
war must always be the last resort. Read the

committed itself to that action at the Pax Christi USA National
Assembly held at the University of Detroit-Mercy July 26-28.
Detroit Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Gumbleton urged the assemblys
600-plus participants to sign a pledge of resistance against U.S.
military action in Iraq. Read the

US Bishops Conference Has Questions
Two months ago, Bishop Wilton Gregory, President of the United
States Conference of Catholic Bishops, wrote President George Bush
to welcome efforts to focus the world's attention on Iraq's refusal
to comply with several United Nations resolutions over the past
eleven years, and its pursuit of weapons of mass destruction. This
letter, which was authorized by the U.S. Bishops' Administrative
Committee, raised serious questions about the moral legitimacy of
any preemptive, unilateral use of military force to overthrow the
government of Iraq. As a body, we make our own the questions and
concerns raised in Bishop Gregory's letter, taking into account
developments since then, especially the unanimous action of the U.N.
Security Council on November 8th. Read

Jesuit Priest Says the US Unilateralism Aggravates the World's
Problems
In the 24 months of the Bush administration, Americas foreign
policy has become confused and incoherent because of a new and
indefensible unilateralism. The United States has more and more
isolated itself from international law and from the accumulated
wisdom of the arms control community.
The most recent example of the Lone Ranger mentality is the
announcement by the White House that it will return to the idea of
creating a shield in the sky against incoming missiles. This
concept, created by President Reagan as Star Wars, has never
worked and is not needed since the demise of the Evil Empire in
1990. Read Article.
