What is your mission?

Catholics for a Just War developed this website to inform and educate people, particularly Catholics. When we read the Catechism of the Catholic Church on Just War we find the pending war with Iraq to meet these conditions. Of course we hope and pray for a peaceful solution and still hold onto the hope that war can be avoided. This being said we believe President Bush has met the necessary conditions and is prudently proceeding with regard to the question of Iraq. Read the Open Letter from Lay Catholic Leaders. The Pope, the US Bishops, and the Catechism always defer judgment to the political leaders when considering a just war. This is often "overlooked" by those in the media and many Catholics are led astray. Faithful Catholics can disagree on this war but the Catholic Church recognizes that the conditions of a just war must be measured by the political leaders. Read more on this point - Sed Contra

Who are you? What organization is involved with Catholics for a Just War?

This site was created by faithful Catholics concerned that only one side of the Catholic position is being presented on the war with Iraq. We are not affiliated with any organization but find many Catholic leaders stand in agreement on this war.  For a listing of leaders who support this position read the Open Letter from Lay Catholics. Unfortunately there are no big financial backers for this effort, if you agree with our mission please consider sending a contribution via our on-line form.

The primary contact for the group is Michael Hernon, please feel free to contact him with any further questions.

What about the Pope's recent statements?

The Holy Father is the Vicar of Christ and Successor of Peter and we, as all Catholics should revere and respect his words and also pray for him.  You can read one of his Address to the Diplomatic Corp.  This being said we find the media distorting the Pope's call for peaceful solutions and his urging that war leads to violence.  The Pope is not a pacifist, but we would never expect him to be outspoken in favor of any war  The Holy Father is and should be challenging the world to solve all disagreements through peaceful means.  His admonitions are based both on long standing tradition of the Catholic Church on war being the last resort and his love and respect for the sacredness of life.  The Pope is not stating a defined teaching of the Church with regard to this specific war. But his words should cause us pause.

Based on this understanding we soberly believe, based on the facts, this war meets the conditions for a just war.  We must always remain vigilant and keep our political leaders fixed on this moral goal.  The Just War Doctrine does not focus solely on the conditions prior to going to war but also how the war is executed.  Read our position on this war.
